RELSHIELD-IV® Coatings

These and other conditions take place that require the unique performance properties of "thick-film" coatings.

RELSHIELD-IV® coatings are quickly and efficiently produced in dedicated Akzo Nobel manufacturing facilities in short cycle times. Approved RELSHIELD-IV®colors combine time and exterior grade pigmentation with good color weathering, durability and installed service life. RELSHIELD-IV® colors continue to perform well on test fence exposures and real life construction sites around the world. These coatings are suitable for coil coating on one or both sides and are available with smooth or textured finishes on metal coated steel or aluminum substrates.

END USE DESCRIPTION

REL-SHIELD®IV describes a thick-film plastisol coil coating system formulated for construction applications where surface elasticity, toughness and moisture resistance are most important. Prepainted REL-SHIELD®IV coils are fabricated into a variety of prefabricated metal construction components, primarily for residential siding and industrial, commercial, siding and roofing. Characteristic of this technology is the application of 4.0-8.0 mils of total dry film thickness. REL-SHIELD®IV formulas can be made to produce "smooth", "rippled" and "striated" surface textures. Akzo Nobel offers a jobsite review form and process to guide recommendations for harsh service environments. Years of continuous research and actual outdoor testing have guided our ability to produce REL-SHIELD®IV coatings in selected array of performance colors that blend well with collateral construction materials.

FEATURES

REL-SHIELD®IV features:

  • Very good metal protection in a variety of climatic conditions.
  • Provides optimum resistance to water soluble chemical agents
  • "Smooth", "rippled" or "striated" surface textures are available
  • Good batch-to-batch consistency
  • Excellent roll-forming
  • Good gloss and color retention
  • Selected colors for optimum properties
  • Good Thick-Film Performance

APPLICATION

REL-SHIELD®IV coatings are intended to be factory applied, to metal substrates according to Akzo Nobel Product Data Sheets, over primer, by the coil coating method only. This process efficiently and economically applies primer and REL-SHIELD®IV coatings according to exact film thickness specifications across the entire panel width. In this process, coatings are applied to specified metal substrates that have been thoroughly cleaned and chemically pretreated in accordance with manufacturer's instructions to optimize adhesion, forming and weathering. REL-SHIELD®IV coatings and primer must be baked and cured in factory ovens at temperatures ranging from 400°-435°F. Color, gloss, hardness, cure, flexibility and adhesion are only a few of the performance characteristics monitored in the quality control process. The coil coating process is highly efficient with nearly 100% transfer efficiency to the metal coils. This process collects and destroys almost all volatile organic content (VOC's) usually associated to any painting process.

PRODUCT COMPOSITION

The REL-SHIELD®IV coating system is formulated from selected PVC (polyvinyl chloride) resin dispersed in solvent; the result known as "plastisol" technology. Characteristic of this technology is the application of 4.0-8.0 mils of total dry film thickness. Akzo Nobel manufacturing methods uniformly distribute pigments into a proprietary mix of resins that has proven, under years of harsh 45° South Florida exposure, to resist changes in color and general appearance and, to preserve film integrity and coating properties

MAINTENANCE

Proper maintenance is vital for any coating to achieve maximum installed life performance. Contact Akzo Nobel and ask for a copy of our "Care and Maintenance Guide" for recommended methods and procedures. Colormatched air-dry coatings for post construction touch-up and scratch repair, as mentioned in the "Care and Maintenance Guide," are available for REL-SHIELD®IV coatings through your prepainted metal products fabricator.

COSTING and WARRANTY

Contact your panel system fabricator for accurate installed cost estimates. Coating system performance warranties are available. Contact Akzo Nobel Coatings Marketing and Sales department or your panel system supplier.

The two layer combination of RELSHIELD primer with RELSHIELD-IV® topcoats creates a very effective moisture barrier for prefinished metal for construction. RELSHIELD-IV® "PVC" coatings are often used for new or renovation construction projects where unusual moisture or potentially corrosive conditions are likely to occur.
