In the first stage of this automated process, bare coils are unwound and cleaned and/or otherwise pretreated to prepare them for painting. Then, one or two layers of paint, topcoat-only or primer and topcoat, are applied, to both sides of the metal. Coating thickness of each coating layer is closely controlled and uniformly applied from edge to edge of the coil strip. Coatings are then baked, reacted or otherwise cured in ovens specially designed for that purpose and to capture and control solvents or reaction products that result.
